Light Therapy: Benefits, Uses, and How It Works
Light therapy, also known as phototherapy, is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to improve physical and mental health conditions. It is commonly used in both clinical and at-home settings to regulate biological processes, improve mood, and support skin health.
What is Light Therapy?
Light therapy involves exposure to artificial light that mimics natural sunlight. The light is typically delivered through special lamps, boxes, or LED devices that emit controlled intensities of brightness. Unlike ordinary lighting, light therapy devices are designed to filter out harmful UV rays while delivering beneficial wavelengths.
This therapy is based on the idea that light exposure influences the body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm. When this rhythm is disrupted—due to limited sunlight exposure, shift work, or seasonal changes—various physical and emotional symptoms may occur.
